What Should I Be Paying for Website Hosting?

Creating a new website can be an exciting moment if it is your first time doing the geek stuff. As the Internet matures, the cost of hosting has gone down significantly. Compared to 2008, hosting has become a lot cheaper and more powerful today.

But not all hosting providers are good. Some of them are plain bad while others attract the unhealthy neighbors like link spamming server farms. So it is important to choose a reputable and reliable host

When it comes to hosting, free doesn’t always mean you are not paying a price. As far as possible, stay away from free stuff because such services are usually supported by bad or malicious websites.

So how much should you pay for hosting?

A reliable hosting plan can start for as little as $2 a month and go up to several thousands of dollars, depending on the kind of service the host provides.

For example, you can get a magnetic hard drive based hosting for $2 a month or you can pay $5 and opt for an SSD based hard drive. The price went up because the fetch speed is much higher in case of SSD than a magnetic hard drive.

Another factor which could impact the cost is the processing power. While an Intel Celeron based server could be cheap, it will be slow in its response to requests. This, in turn, will result in slow computations, requests and generally a slow website.

Another thing to consider is whether you are taking a shared hosting or dedicated hosting. A shared hosting plan gives you a specified amount space and computational power on a shared OS. i.e. you will have neighbours. Some plans may give you a dedicated IP while other offer a shared IP.

If you have some form of payment system on your website, it is better to have a dedicated IP address. Cost of a dedicated IP with shared hosting could cost anywhere from $5 up to $20 a month.

In case you want to run your site on a dedicated system, the cost starts from about $100 a month. For that price, you get your own server, hosting space, bandwidth, RAM and other resources all for your use. If you have a big website with a lot of visitors, dedicated hosting is the best option for you.
